There is no reason to let diabetes affect your career in any way. Even though diabetes can lead to some working day challenges, knowing how to deal with it is important. The more you know about your disorder, the more you are prepared to control your blood sugar levels. Here are some tips and advice on managing your diabetes at workplace.1

Do's

  • Prefer to take lunch and snacks with you, mainly go for healthy options including fruit or vegetables as well as low in salt, sugar and fat1
  • Make your boss aware that you might have to take time off work on more than one occasion to get your health checks
  • Always keep some healthy snacks in your desk drawer to help manage your blood glucose during stressful days3
  • Make sure to move every 30 minutes regularly: Take a short walk, do muscle stretches, walk up and down the stairs4
  • Manage mid-afternoon sugar cravings with healthy snacks and drinks like almonds, walnuts, chopped veggies, green tea4

Dont's

  • Never miss your breakfast on a working day as it can lead to very low glucose levels and also affect performance1
  • Do not hesitate to be honest with your team about restrictions you might have because of diabetes3
  • Do not be embarrassed if you need to eat something during a meeting, and have a sugary food whenever you think you need it3
  • Do not give up to food temptations; go for small portions and keep a check on your blood sugar level whenever you do4

  • Do not forget to stick to your regular mealtimes; you will need to discuss with your doctor if there is any change to it5
