Can I get pregnant with Hypothyroidism and irregular periods?

If you are trying to get pregnant you may be asked to go for a thyroid disorder test. This is because a thyroid disorder, especially hypothyroidism with irregular periods, can make it difficult to get pregnant.

However, once your doctor has diagnosed your condition, they will find the best possible way to help treat the condition so that your chances of conceiving are better.

How does thyroid affect pregnancy?

If you are diagnosed with hypothyroidism, chances are that it can increase your risk of infertility as the hypothyroidism is often related to infertility in women.

When you have hypothyroidism, your thyroid gland is not able to produce the amount of important hormones it requires for the proper functioning of your body and various organs. As a result, you may experience low levels of certain hormones, which can also cause interfere in the release of eggs from your ovaries, a process that takes place when you are ovulating.

This can have negative impact on your fertility and can create issues in getting pregnant. If you have hypothyroidism, where your thyroid gland is not able to work the way it should, it is important that you get yourself diagnosed immediately and start on the required treatment plan. A thyroid disorder can also make it more difficult for you to conceive and can interfere with your monthly periods. You could be experiencing very heavy and longer periods, which could make you anaemic, or experience very less or no periods.

How can you manage thyroid condition and still get pregnant?

If you already know that you have a thyroid problem, speak to your doctor to see if you need any medications that can help manage the issue. Ensuring that the thyroid condition is under control is important for a healthy pregnancy.

If the hormone levels are too low, you will not be able to ovulate properly. In this case, your doctor may recommend you medications that can help improve the fertility and thereby the chances of conception.

You should always check with your doctor on the frequency of tests to monitor the hormonal levels. Most doctors advise to monitoring your thyroid hormone levels 4-6 weeks of starting the thyroid treatment.

Which doctor can help you manage it better?

In this case, since you are planning to conceive, it is best that you speak to your gynaecologist and discuss about your thyroid issue, so that you can work together to arrive at the treatment option best suited for you. In some cases, your gynaecologist may seek opinion from an endocrinologist. An endocrinologist is a doctor who helps to diagnose and manage various health conditions related to hormonal imbalance.

Pregnancy is a delicate journey. Enjoy it with a positive attitude. Together with your doctor you can tread this path in a healthy manner.
