Apparels for Osteoarthritis Patients
Many studies indicate that weather change increases the severity of symptoms in osteoarthritis patients
Following are some of the measures, related to apparels, that may help in managing osteoarthritis symptoms during weather changes:
Trapping of heat
You should wear such types of clothes that prevent the loss of heat from your body. Heat is important for a patient with osteoarthritis as it prevents the joints from getting stiff, especially in winter conditions. Thus, the clothing should be such that it forms an insulating layer between the body and the environment.
Wearing the right clothing
Right clothes are important to avoid the flare-up of arthritic symptoms due to changing weather. The preventive mechanism should be initiated as soon as the weather starts changing. The patients should wear loose and layered clothing to prevent heat transmission. Thermal leggings or underclothing help in keeping the body warm.
To avoid any moisture entrapment, do not wear undergarments made of cotton. Instead, prefer to wear those made of polyester or silk. The body loses almost 10 percent of the heat from the head. The patient should wear a hat or a cap made of wool. To protect the neck and face, ensure that you are using scarf made of wool or other material that protects you from cold weather. The patient should also wear a jacket to reduce the effect of cold weather on joints.
The Importance of wearing comfortable apparels
Alteration in weather does not mean that the patient should not exercise to avoid the chilly weather. However, not moving or exercising as per the doctor’s recommendation may make the joints stiff and cause pain. To have a relaxed movement, the patient should avoid jeans and prefer comfortable trousers.
Cover-up the feet
The patient should wear socks to maintain insulation. In the case of a damp and cold environment, the patient should wear waterproof boots.
Paying attention to clothing to stay warm in winter is one of the easiest ways to alleviate the pain of osteoarthritis. Taking the above precautions can help you have a comfortable and enjoyable winter.
